Portrait of a National Race Secretary - November 2000
Rae Moore has recently retired from the positions of National Race Secretary and TD Coordinator, and from the SAXC Comittee...

Rae Moore has done this demanding job for four years but now it's time for her to induct her successor.

A regular Mt Baw Baw skier, Rae came from a mostly downhill skiing background and was inducted into the X-C fraternity through the Technical Delegate courses run by Brian Keeble in 1994 and 1995. She accepted an invitation to become Calendar and National Race Secretary, put forward by Peter Ward, at the 1995 Congress at Charlotte's Pass. At the same time she volunteered to be TD Coordinator if no-one else would do it. For the past four years she has undertaken the duties of both offices.

Some XC people got a shock when she demanded that they pay up and get their entries in on time, but she was successful in both requests and the completed Calendar now rolls off the presses in time for the first edition of XC News and Alpine News. Rae joined SAXXC to become familiar with the background to Calendar decisions and at the Congress at Mt Beauty in 1998 she became an elected member of SAXCC.

She has also been a member of the Victorian XC committee for two years.

In 1999 Rae ran a Technical Delegate's course in NSW which saw six more people qualify, and this year she went to the Snow Farm in New Zealand where she ran a TD course over there. This year she was TD for two weekends and assistant TD at the Hoppet, and will be available for TD appointments in 2001.

The 2000 season saw her at most Victorian resorts and also in NSW.

During the 1994-1998 years she qualified for the Ski Tour Leadership Certificate (STLC) and enjoys snow camping.

Rae has been the organiser of the Tullicoutty and St Phillack XC races at Mt Baw Baw for nearly twenty years and hopes to put her energies into this next year when it will become part of the Vic Interclub series.

But for the immediate future Rae has decided to withdraw from the admin side of XC and concentrate on more "on snow" activities, and hopes to bump into many of the XC ski friends that she has met in the past four years.

She hopes that some of the people who are involved in the XC scene will see their way clear to take turns on the committees that are involved in the administration of the sport. The past four years have been very trying especially because of the ongoing problems with Skiing Australia. SAXCC will only revitalise when its gets the finances to carry out its programs and the people, including volunteers, prepared to commit to these.

Three issues which haven't progressed far over this time are the 1993 "Green Book" which is no closer to being revised and republished, the National Officiating Program (NOP) that has been waiting for 4 years, and the TD program which is running on a shoe string.
