May 9 - Membership and Race Licences for 2007

As this will effect how all state and national membership and race licences are organised this year, it will not be possible to join up or register for a race licence until after this meeting. In the interim SSA memberships are extended until June.

As soon as the new membership and race licence procedures and details are available they will be posted in the Race Licence section of this site.

May 8 - Technical Delegate Courses

The Cross Country Committee of Ski and Snowboard Australia (SAXC) is running the following Technical Delegate (TD) courses this year:

Saturday 2nd June, 2007 - National Technical Delegate Course - Mt Beauty - 9.30 am to 6.00 pm
Sunday 3rd June, 2007 - International Technical Delegate Update - Mt Beauty - 9.30 am to 4.00 pm

This is the theory component of both courses. The "on snow" practical component of the course will be completed sometime during this winter.

The National TD Course (Level 3) has been developed in Australia over several years by Rae Moore (National TD Coordinator) and Brian Keeble and is sanctioned by FIS. Rae and Brian have conducted two of these courses over the past few years. The course has three components - a theory component (off snow), an open book exam component and a practical component (on snow). For the off-snow theory component the organisers will provide the venue, some course material and morning and afternoon tea. A course fee of $ 50 will be charged to cover course costs. Candidates will be asked to provide their own transport, accommodation and lunch. This will be the only National TD course conducted this year. At the end of the theory component candidates will be handed an open book exam which they will take away, work on at home and return their answers to either Rae Moore or Brian Keeble by the 30th June.

For the "on snow" practical component the candidates will be required to "shadow" and experienced Level 4 TD at a designated XC race sometime during the winter. They will be required to complete a "shadow" TD Report, participate in all Jury meetings and take part in all course inspections. Candidates will be asked to provide their own transport, accommodation and lunch. There will be no course fee for this component.

Candidates who wish to attend a National TD course should be able to satisfy a majority of the following criteria.

  • Experience as a volunteer at XC ski races,
  • Experience at being a Race Organiser (Chief of Race, Chief of Course, Race Secretary etc),
  • Have a reasonable understanding of the rules of XC ski racing,
  • Be able to ski all types of courses in both techniques (classic and skating),
  • A XC ski racing background as a competitor,
  • Decision making skills,
  • Experience at chairing meetings.

XC skiing desperately needs to develop a larger pool of National TD's so that a qualified TD's can be appointed to all Club, State and National XC ski races in Australia. If you are interested in participating in this course please contact Rae Moore or Brian Keeble (see contact details below) as soon as possible - but no later than 18th May.

The International Technical Delegate Update is for current international TDs wishing to update their qualifications. The course on Sunday 3rd June this year will cover the following topics

  1. The new FIS TD Guidelines.
  2. 2004 Edition of the ICR and the 04/05 and 05/06 updates.
  3. Revised rules for the calculation of FIS Points.
  4. TD's role at Sprint Races and Team Sprint Races
  5. Drug Testing
  6. Commercial Marking.
  7. TD reports - FIS and National.
  8. TD expenses.

All existing Level 4 TD's are asked to make every effort to attend this update. The organisers will provide the venue, course material and morning and afternoon tea. A course fee of $ 20 will be charged to cover course costs. This will be the only International TD update course conducted this year.

Existing Level 4 TDs are asked to contact either Rae Moore or Brian Keeble if they intend to participate in this update as soon as possible - but no later than the 18th May.
