Skiing Australia Cross Country (SAXC) is in the process of organising the overseas program for the Australian cross country teams for the 1998/99 northern winter. At this stage no direct financial support is available for the teams, although sponsorship and funding is being sought from a number of sources including from business.
SAXC is proposing to send the following teams overseas:
· National senior team - men and women, the objectives are to
- achieve below 50 FIS points for men/below 75 FIS point for women to be eligible to race in FIS World Cup races
- compete in the World Championships at Ramsau, 18-28 February
- provide valuable overseas experience and training
· National junior team - men and women, the objectives are to
- compete in the World Junior Championship in Saalfelden, 3-7 February,
- compete in junior and regional races to gain valuable overseas experience and training
· Development squad - men and women, with objectives of
- providing a supportive program to assist athletes develop their skiing skills and experience overseas conditions
- undertaking regional races.
Senior team: At this stage it is likely that the senior team will travel initially to North America to compete in US/Canada FIS races and then travel to Europe. Locations are under consideration - possibly Switzerland or Northern Italy.
The team will require a manager.
Junior team: This team will travel directly to Europe and train for the World Juniors. The team may be co-located with the senior team in Europe.
This team will probably need a coach and a manager.
Development squad: The squad and its program will be decided once the senior and junior teams are firmed up.
The possibility of North America with a coach/manager is one possibility.
