Recognition of Prior Learning Policy

For the full information kit in word format, click here.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is based on the awareness that people learn in many different ways throughout their lifetime - through work experience and life experience as well as through education and training. RPL takes into account a person's skills and experience, no matter where these were learnt, to enable people to get credit in a course of study.

All applicants for RPL must submit an application form to the National Coaching Director, who will then arrange for it to be assessed by the National Coaching Panel.

Examples of Credit.

Credits for Prior Study and Learning: Candidates may apply for exemption from all or part of modules of the course. Such people will be required to document their prior learning and submit it in writing to the National Coaching Director. The candidate may be required to further demonstrate their expertise in a written or practical demonstration.

Credits for coaching principles: In each case, applicants must supply the National Coaching Director with such letters, transcripts, course outlines, or certificates as is necessary to satisfy the requirements for the module. Some examples include:

  • Level 1 accreditation in another sport
  • Phys Ed or Sports science degree
  • Equivalent overseas qualifications
  • Appropriate teaching experience and qualifications

    Credits for Sport Specific Knowledge.

Athletes who can provide evidence of reaching the following standards will gain credit for the modules of the course related to skills and competition rules etc. They will not be given credit for modules relating to progressions and how to coach skills unless they have additional competence in that area. For example:

  • Top 5 in Australia for three years or more, including competition at senior international level

    RPL Procedure.

    1. Request an application information kit from the National Coaching Director

    2. Complete the application form and send it back to the National Coaching Director

    3. The application will then be assessed by the National Coaching Panel

    4. You will be then notified whether your application has been successful.
